Didn’t people file in April? Many residents still filed by the original Tax Day, but they technically didn’t have to. Angelenos got a rare break this year because of the January fires. It’s part of a process that’s kickstarted when a disaster is declared, which allows for a window of time to help people recoup tax records that may have been destroyed.

Who did this apply to? It applied to all of L.A. County. The IRS automatically gave the extension to anyone — including businesses — who filed with an L.A. County ZIP code.

What about estimated payments? The deadline for estimated payments was also moved, so it may be time to pay Uncle Sam. The extension applied to 2024 payments due on Jan. 15, 2025, as well as 2025 payments due on April 15, June 16 and Sept. 15.
