PAWTUCKET – Amalia Oganesian became the first Pawtucket tennis player to capture an RIIL girls’ singles championship on Sunday afternoon at Slater Park’s Mike Kenny Courts, as she netted a 7-5, 6-1 victory over South Kingstown High senior and two-time defending state champion Alexa Clark.

Oganesian, who is homeschooled and active on the junior tournament scene, also plays from Shea High, and she experienced very few problems on her way to the title.

In her first two matches, Oganesian netted 6-0, 6-0 victories over two juniors from Barrington High, Carla Chen and Addison Friedman, and after she also shut out Ponaganset junior Julianna Steere in the quarterfinals, she posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over La Salle Academy freshman Caroline Trask in the semis.
