MANHATTAN — THE MEXICAN NAVY’S tall ship Cuauhtémoc has set sail for home after six months of repairs in New York following its fatal collision with the Brooklyn Bridge in May that killed two cadets and injured 19 sailors, according to Marine Insight.
Hundreds gathered at Pier 86 near the Intrepid Museum on Saturday to bid farewell as the 297-foot training vessel began its 35-day voyage back to Cozumel, Mexico. The ship underwent major repairs at Caddell Repair & Dry Dock on Staten Island, including the reconstruction of all three masts and rudder inspections.
The NTSB continues to investigate why the vessel reversed into the bridge during a ceremony on May 17.
