A search for a missing pensioner ended in tragedy after a body was found on Southport beach.

George Norwell, 77, was last been seen by his family in Whittle-le-Woods, Lancs, at 9.30am on Saturday. Police said his blue Ford Focus was found at the Boulevard area of Preston at around 10.30am, close to the River Ribble.

A major search operation was launched involving fire crews, the coastguard and a helicopter with 'extensive searches to locate George'. Officers were alerted on Monday morning by Merseyside Police that a man's body had been found on Southport beach.

The force has today confirmed the body is that of George Norwell. His family have been informed of the 'tragic development' and are being given support. View 2 Images
