WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senate Democrats are expected to force a vote on a resolution that would block the military from issuing further strikes on boats allegedly carrying drugs without prior authorization by Congress.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently announced that the military carried out several strikes against boats carrying illegal drugs off the coast of Venezuela.
The War Powers Resolution, enacted in 1973, prevents any president from taking military action against a foreign entity without an official declaration of war by Congress. Without such a declaration, the president must notify Congress of any action within 48 hours, and military force must be withdrawn within 60 days.
