ROCKWOOD, Maine — During the first week of October, summer visitors were packing it in and heading home from Moosehead Lake.

The small ferry services to Mount Kineo—a dramatic cliff face that sharply rises out of an island on the lake—were still shuttling people back and forth, but there was hardly any boat traffic on the Rockwood portion of Maine's largest lake.

For Jason Smith, that meant less potential interference for his favorite hobby.

When I arrived at the boat launch on a Friday morning, the Milo native loaded a crate onto local Dave Pullo's pontoon boat, joined eagerly by Pullo's dog, Aurora.
