COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) is working to gain more oversight into the finances of school districts and stop problems before they're happening.
In a meeting of the House Legislative Oversight subcommittee tasked with looking into the Department of Education, lawmakers pushed the SCDE to look closer at districts' finances and inventory processes.
The discussion comes after two school districts, Jasper County and Marlboro County, have been taken over by the department in the past year.
Meanwhile, Richland One, Hampton and Clarendon, are on fiscal caution, and Georgetown County is on fiscal watch, according to a February report from the Department of Education.
