HOUSTON — Texas Governor Greg Abbott has asked the Texas Department of Transportation to enforce strict roadway guidelines, threatening to withhold state and federal funding from cities that fail to comply with the order to remove what he calls "any and all political ideologies from streets."
The directive comes less than a week after Houston repainted a rainbow crosswalk at Westheimer and Taft in Montrose. The symbol of LGBTQ+ pride had been removed for a Metro construction project and was subsequently repainted. It was funded by Pride Houston, with approval from the city.
Abbott did not directly mention the crosswalk, but a far-right social media account recently called out the project.
