ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WCSC) - The Orangeburg City Council passed the Hate Intimidation Ordinance as a commitment to safety and equality for residents.

City officials say the ordinance is to protect residents from intimidation or harassment based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation and other protected classes.

With the new ordinance, it will be unlawful for anyone to cause fear, harm, injury or damage to a victim or property.

Penalties of violating the ordinance include:

A fine of up to $500

A misdemeanor charge or up to 30 days in jail, or both at a judge’s discretion.
