AUSTIN, Texas — Meals on Wheels of Central Texas not only delivers meals to people who may need a little extra assistance — they’re also helping care for their clients’ pets.
Through its PALS program, which stands for Pets Assisting the Lives of Seniors, the nonprofit provides monthly pet food deliveries and veterinary care for clients who might otherwise struggle to afford it.
Program Manager Nora Salinas said the idea came after Meals on Wheels discovered some clients were sharing their own meals with their pets back in 2007.
“So, we were like, ‘There’s definitely a need,'" Salinas said. “Our neighbors are often managing a lot of hardships already. They may be dealing with a chronic illness, or are living alone on a limited income. We’re able to step in and take that worry off their p
