ELK GROVE, Calif. —

October is National Pedestrian Safety Month, and Wednesday marks National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day, a nationwide effort to promote healthy habits and safer streets.

Students and families at Butler Elementary School in Elk Grove are joining thousands across the country to take part in this fun, heart-healthy event.

Parents and children were encouraged to walk, bike, or roll to school together. Organizers hope it allows families to stay active and also to learn important safety tips.

Police and school officials say this day serves as a reminder for everyone to slow down in school zones and to stay alert for pedestrians during the morning commute.
