The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians will help maintain a key U.S. highway that connects Cherokee in North Carolina to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, during the federal government shutdown .

At a special session Oct. 7, the Eastern Band's tribal council unanimously approved an emergency resolution to maintain U.S. 441/Newfound Gap Road in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The tribal council may allocate funds from the general fund to help pay workers and contract for emergency maintenance and services as necessary to keep the road open.
