Nothing says hockey like an opening night encounter between the Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs.

The teams faced each other Wednesday night at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena for the 23rd time in a season-opening game — and for a sixth straight season. And yet, something seemed to be missing. There was little intensity and emotion. Only four minor penalties were assessed. This game could have used John Ferguson and Eddie Shack. Kids, ask your grandparents about that reference.

Toronto’s 5-2 victory was misleading, since the Leafs’ final two goals were scored into an empty net. Article content
