DES MOINES, Iowa —

Matt Russell, executive director of the Iowa Farmers Union, has been farming his entire life.

Before he started his own farm in Lacona two decades ago, he spent his childhood and teenage years on his parents' farm in western Iowa.

But about 40 years after his time at his parents' farm, he still remembers the hardships he saw farmers — including his parents — go through during the 1980s farming crisis.

"There was a lot of pressure and a lot of stress," he said. "There were some farms that made it through, and there were others that didn't."

Now, he says that stress is returning — and it's compounded by the fact that federal aid for farmers remains in limbo.
