Palestinians in Gaza welcomed but feel uncertain about the news of the deal reached between Israel and Hamas to put in place the 'first phase' of US President Donald Trump's peace plan.

The news came in the middle of the night in Gaza, when most people were sleeping, but at Al Aqsa Martyrs hospital, paramedic Saeed Awad was on duty and following the news.

Trump announced on Wednesday that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the “first phase” of his peace plan to pause fighting and release at least some hostages and prisoners, in a major breakthrough in the two-year-old war.

“This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace,” Trump wrote on social media.

Hamas plans to release all 20 living hostages in the coming days, people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press, while the Israeli military will begin a withdrawal from the majority of Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on social media: “With God’s help we will bring them all home.” Hamas said separately that the deal would ensure the withdrawal of Israeli troops as well as allow for the entry of aid and exchange of hostages and prisoners.

""We want to go home, to tend to our affairs, to check on our homes. Even though there are no more homes, but we still want to go home. We want to work. We have been sleeping and staying in the street," said Alaa Abd Rabbo, a displaced man from Jabaliya living in Deir al-Balah.
