Columbia potentially could start baling fiber products like cardboard for recycling but the city's utilities department first needs to build a protective structure over the equipment.

The utilities department took public feedback Tuesday night, Oct. 7, at the Activity and Recreation Center about potential plans for a new recycling facility and department director Erin Keys discussed what could happen , in the meantime, earlier that day with the Tribune.

When the Easter Sunday tornado April 20 hit the city's materials recovery facility, it was all but flattened, destroying much of the equipment inside that was used to sort and process the city's recycling products. While balers were damaged, they could be repaired and operate again, Keys said.
