Dear Editor:

It is common today to hear the term “Christian Nationalism” thrown around very freely and, rightly or wrongly, it is attached to any number of faith-based efforts. The basics of the nationalism movement are to have the government centered on the Christian faith.

Some 238 years ago our founders debated this issue as they structured our Constitution. They wrote in Article VI of the Constitution that “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” Of note that proceeded this statement establishes a requirement for an “Oath or affirmation to support the constitution” by those holding public office.
