A Madison, Wisconsin man was sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine Tuesday for shipping scientific equipment to Russia in defiance of sanctions imposed against the country after its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Andrew Pogosyan, 68, acting through his company Omega Diagnostics, falsely claimed that the shipments were going to Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Latvia and Lithuania, when in fact those were just stops before getting to their final recipients in Russia, according to a plea agreement filed June 23 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin.
At least one of the recipients had ties to a branch of the Russian Ministry of Defense that does chemical weapons development, the agreement says, although U.S. District Judge William
