However, the holiday has been criticized because of the way the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus treated Indigenous people.

In 2021, former President Joe Biden issued the first presidential proclamation in honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day, on the same date as Columbus Day. While Indigenous Peoples' Day is not recognized as a federal holiday, it is recognized in cities and states.
