Doral became the first city in Miami-Dade County to approve its own law regulating the use of electric scooters and electric bikes, and the legislation takes effect on Thursday.

The rules cover everything from mandatory safety equipment and age limits to penalties for violations.

"It’s extremely important to have regulations, because we’ve seen a number of accidents over the past couple of years. It’s something very important for us to monitor," Doral Police Chief Edwin López told our sister station Telemundo 51 in Spanish.

Mandatory safety equipment

With this initiative, the rules regarding safety equipment are changing.

Helmets will be required to operate an e-bike or e-scooter, and at night, so will lights and reflective vests.
