Four members of famed Peruvian cumbia band Agua Marina were wounded Wednesday when gunmen opened fire behind the stage where the musicians were performing, authorities said.

Police said the attackers fled the scene on a motorcycle and may be part of an extortion ring operating in the country.

Luis Quiroga, the band’s drummer, was in serious condition after being shot three times, including once in the abdomen, Lima Police Chief Felipe Monroy told reporters early Thursday.

Officers recovered 27 nine-millimeter shell casings at the scene, Monroy said.

Another musician was shot in the leg, while two others sustained chest wounds, according to police.

Agua Marina, a beloved cumbia orchestra with more than four decades of history, has not issued a public statement about the attack.

The shooting comes months after Paul Flores, lead singer of another popular cumbia group, Armonía 10, was killed in March when suspected extortionists opened fire on the band’s bus.

Peru has seen a sharp rise in extortion-related violence this year.

Government data shows that between January and August, authorities received 18,385 extortion complaints — almost a 30% increase from the same period in 2024.
