A passenger suffered serious injuries after the same moose was hit by cars on opposite sides of Route 101 in Candia on Wednesday night, New Hampshire State Police said.

Troopers were called to Route 101 at 8:10 p.m. for a report of two cars hitting a moose. A Mazda 3 heading east on Route 101 hit the moose before the moose crossed over to the westbound lanes and was hit by a Kia Sportage.

The moose had to be euthanized due to the severity of the injuries from both crashes, state police said in a press release Thursday morning.

An adult passenger in the Kia was taken to Elliot Hospital in Manchester and treated for serious injuries. The driver of the Mazda was not injured, police said.

The names of the drivers and passenger were not released. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
