SAN DIEGO -- The Padres announced on Thursday that they have signed 18-year-old Taiwanese right-hander Lan-Hong Su, the organization’s first signing out of Taiwan since 2016.

Su pitched as the closer for the Chinese Taipei 18U team at the World Cup in Japan in September. He posted a 2.46 ERA in the tournament while limiting opponents to a .192 average. Su struck out 14 and walked three across 7 1/3 innings.

“We’re excited to add Su to the organization and look forward to helping him achieve his dream of becoming a Major League pitcher,” Padres scouting director Chris Kemp said in a statement. “Scouting him over the years has been a team effort, but recent looks from Po-Hsuan Keng, Trevor Schumm and Dave Post cemented our beliefs on Su as both a pitcher and teammate.”
