GARY — A driver of a garbage truck suffered a medical emergency early Wednesday before clipping another vehicle and crashing alongside a building near Broadway and 11th Avenue, according to local firefighters.

Firefighters said they responded around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to the scene of the crash involving the Republic Services garbage truck.

"The truck clipped a car before leaving the roadway and coming to rest against a building on the southwest corner," officials said.

Emergency responders found the truck driver conscious, but unresponsive.

"Working together, firefighters safely accessed the cab, stabilized the patient, and removed him from the vehicle," the department reported. "Once alert, he was treated and transported to Methodist Northlake for further care."
