The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the alleged suicide of Dalit IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar and issued a notice to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) of Chandigarh. The Commission has directed both officials to submit an action-taken report within seven days.

Exercising powers vested under Article 338 of the Constitution of India, the Commission stated that it will conduct an inquiry and investigation into the matter.

The NCSC has sought detailed information in the report, including the names of all accused persons, the FIR number, date, and relevant sections invoked, details of arrests made, and any compensation provided to the deceased officer’s family.
