A government shutdown that started on October 1st is sending waves of uncertainty across the country, and America’s farmers are once again caught in the crosshairs.

“When a government shutdown happens, you see a lot of government employees furloughed, so you see a diminishing of services,” said Emily Buckman, director of government relations for the American Farm Bureau Federation. “About 50% of USDA’s employees have been furloughed, so there will be no administering of CRP payments, ARC-PLC payments or disaster assistance payments.”

Farmers will also see a halting in implementation of the programs passed in the One Big Beautiful Act, which was passed earlier this year to provide much needed assistance to farmers across the country.
