ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Victims of radiation from Coldwater Creek in north St. Louis County can still apply for compensation despite the ongoing government shutdown.

Missouri Senator Josh Hawley told First Alert 4 Thursday the shutdown, now in its second week, was not affecting Radiation Exposure Compensation Act applications.

“RECA is not on the budget. It’s mandatory spending funding does not stop,” Hawley told First Alert 4. “They’ve set up a dashboard where you can see how many applications are pending, how many are paid out and they’ve already paid out millions of dollars in claims.”

RECA was implemented for people who develop cancer or other diseases because of exposure to materials from the Manhattan Project. That includes people who have lived or worked near Coldwater C
