WESTFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- Westfield Public Schools is dealing with an outbreak of chickenpox, prompting district officials to send a message to parents about the highly contagious disease.

As of Thursday, there were at least five confirmed cases across four Westfield schools, raising concerns among some parents and guardians about the spread of the illness. “I am worried about those children that might not have had their vaccinations for any reason,” said Louise Thompson, a grandparent.

Chickenpox usually lasts around one week with a blister-like itchy rash. Some people may experience more severe symptoms. The disease can also be serious or life-threatening, particularly during pregnancy, in babies, adults, and for people with weakened immune systems.
