VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) - A 16-year-old Valdosta High School student was arrested Thursday after bringing a loaded gun to school, according to the Valdosta Police Department .

The student was charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds and possession of a firearm by a person under 18 years of age, per VPD.

The gun was discovered in the student’s backpack through Valdosta High School’s weapons detection system early Thursday morning, per a press release by Valdosta City Schools .

Per VPD, a school administrator stopped the student, opened their bag and found the loaded gun. Valdosta police said a VPD school resource officer was then notified and they “took custody of the student and the handgun.”
