Karwa Chauth, one of the most significant and famous Hindu festivals, will be commemorated this year on Friday, October 10. Also known as Karak Chaturthi, married women on this day observe nirjala (fast without food and water) vrat from sunrise to moonrise. The fast is kept for the long life, well-being and prosperity of their husbands. They break their fast in the evening, after moon sighting, making offerings to the moon and then take the first sip of water and a morsel of food from their husband’s hands.
