The Labour government has announced an £84 million cash injection on World Homeless Day to help councils support rough sleepers and children and families experiencing homelessness this winter.

Ministers revealed new funding ahead of the 10 October awareness day to help families living in temporary accommodation with essentials such as food, school travel and laundry.

There are a record number of households living in temporary accommodation across England, including nearly 170,000 children. That figure has increased since Labour took charge in Number 10 more than a year ago.

Councils across England have been struggling to cover the cost of supporting homeless households in recent years. Official figures showed last month that local authorities faced a collective bill of £2.8 billion
