ORANGEBURG — The State Law Enforcement Division arrested a man for bringing a weapon into a South Carolina State University residence hall near where a 19-year-old woman was killed in a shooting Oct. 4.

SLED announced the arrest of Jimmy Lee Thompson Jr., 18, on Oct. 9, less than a week after two separate shootings brought an early end to the school’s homecoming weekend celebrations.

Jaliyah Butler, 19, died from the injuries she sustained in the first shooting, which occurred near the Hugine Suites dorm several hours after the university’s homecoming game ended. One man was injured in another shooting that took place about a quarter-mile away.
