ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has charged Jimmy Lee Thompson Jr., 18, of Lexington County, with carrying a weapon on school property in connection with an ongoing investigation at South Carolina State University.

According to SLED, the charge stems from an incident on October 4, 2025, at Hugine Suites, a residential facility on the university’s campus. A loaded FN handgun was found under a chair in the common area of suite during a search warrant, according to an arrest warrant.

Investigators said Thompson admitted to a SLED agent that he had been sleeping in the chair where the firearm was discovered. Witness interviews indicated Thompson was the sole occupant of the common area at the time.
