RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — Dozens of people gathered Thursday night at the Randolph County old courthouse to voice opinions on whether a children’s book about a transgender boy should remain in the public library.

The board of trustees ultimately voted to keep Call Me Max available to library patrons.

The book, which follows a transgender boy discovering his identity, has sparked controversy in different pars of the country, with some school districts removing it from their curriculum.

At Thursday’s meeting, most speakers supported keeping the book on the shelves.

Kathleen Garner, a Randolph County resident, said the book represents children in the community, and removing it would make it unavailable to kids who need to see themselves reflected in literature.
