CHRISNEY, Ind. (WFIE) - A prayer vigil was held Thursday in support of Stacy Payne’s family, just hours before her murderer, Roy Lee Ward, is set to be executed.

Ward was found guilty of the 2001 rape and murder of Payne, and will be executed October 10.

The vigil took place in the sanctuary of Cornerstone Church Chrisney.

No cameras or interviews were allowed inside, but 14 News sat in on the vigil.

The pastor shared scripture and prayed over Payne’s family, friends, and first responders, specifically those who responded the day of Payne’s murder.

Attendees sang songs such as “Amazing Grace” and “I Can Only Imagine.”

They held candles while singing “You Are My Sunshine,” which was Payne’s favorite song.
