On Sunday morning, Sept. 28, in the community of Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, Thomas Jacob Sanford, a man consumed with hatred for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, crashed his truck into the local sanctuary, then opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle. He killed as many as he could, including a 6-year-old, before being shot dead by police.
Numerous funds were quickly set up to aid the victims’ families. However, a man named Dave Butler soon noticed two omissions from the list. Missing were the names of the wife and daughter of the shooter. “Two more victims,” who hadn’t deserved the horror done by their husband and father. “It seemed very cruel,” Butler said, to leave them by the wayside, as recounted in a story by New York Times reporter Sonia A.
