INDIANAPOLIS — More than 150 filmmakers from all over the world hit the red carpet Thursday for opening night of the 34th Heartland International Film Festival .

At Newfields, a screening of "Rental Family" starring Academy Award winner and Hoosier Brendan Fraser kicked off the festival with 100 independent films to be shown over the next 10 days in Indianapolis.

The festival, taking place through Oct. 19, will include 19 world and U.S. premieres, 27 regional premieres, 17 special presentations from major distributors and nine Indiana Spotlight films.

"Last year's Heartland International Film Festival extended our streak of featuring Oscar winners in major event slots, highlighted by Kieran Culkin in 'A Real Pain' and Zoe Saldaña in 'Emilia Pérez,'" artistic director Greg Sorvig said. "
