ALTA, Iowa -- A Rembrandt, Iowa, man was airlifted to a hospital late Wednesday after a head-on collision near Alta in which a second driver also was injured.

Jay Lockwood, 46, was westbound on Iowa Highway 3 in a Ford Econoline van at 8:53 p.m. when he attempted to overtake a semitrailer that was attempting a left-hand turn onto Buena Vista County Road M31. The van then collided head-on with a semitrailer that was eastbound on Iowa 3.

Lockwood's van came to rest in the middle of the highway, and Lockwood had to be extricated from his vehicle. He was flown by helicopter to a Sioux Falls hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to an Iowa State Patrol accident report.
