The Department for Work and Pensions has spoken out over calls to increase the state pension by £19,000 a year. The Labour Party government has been urged to boost state pension payments to nearly £30,000 - up from this year's £11,000+ maximum.

A Parliamentary petition tells the Labour Party government to bring in a "a Universal State Pension" which "should be £586.08 per week or about £30,476.16 per year".

But the DWP says: "The Government has no plans to make the State Pension available from the age of 60 or for it to equal 48 hours a week at the National Living Wage. The Government is committed to supporting current and future generations of pensioners and giving them the dignity and security they deserve in retirement.
