Melbourne Racing Club chairman John Kanga has sensationally resigned on the eve of the club’s Caulfield Cup carnival.

He has stepped down little more than 12 months after sweeping to power and taking control of the club. He became chairman after a bitter boardroom battle, during which time he filed a motion to spill the board.

This masthead reported two weeks ago that Kanga and the club’s leadership had been accused of several governance breaches in complaints lodged with Racing Victoria’s integrity department and the Racing Integrity Commissioner.

The unproven allegations relate to adherence to club rules, privacy breaches and failure to declare conflicts of interest.
