A routine visit to a Canberra rubbish tip has ended in tragedy after a 78-year-old man died from severe head injuries sustained when he was struck by a reversing truck.
Emergency services were called to the Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre just before 3pm on October 1, following reports a man had been hit by a vehicle at the drop-off area.
Police said the man was hit by the reversing truck and pushed into a rubbish collection pit. He was treated at the scene before being rushed to hospital with critical injuries, but died several days later on Friday.
Detective Acting Sergeant Nathan Smorhun said early indications suggested the incident was a heartbreaking accident rather than a case of negligence.
