ANDERSON, Ind. - Madison County leaders are under pressure, trying to balance a budget that's millions in the red.
Time is running out for County Council members to settle on a 2026 budget they learned will be much tighter than expected. As the clock ticks, the Madison County sheriff is urging them to consider new challenges facing his department.
"The number of deputies actively pursuing outside employment is now 16," one deputy said during Thursday's special council meeting.
A few deputies went before the council predicting an "irreversible crisis” without a competitive new contract.
"If nothing changes, I can guarantee you it will affect this county and the safety of its citizens for years to come," another deputy said.
