Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado on Friday bagged the Nobel Peace Prize for promoting democratic rights in her country and her struggle to achieve a peaceful transition to democracy, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.

"When authoritarians seize power, it is crucial to recognise courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist," it said.

This year, the Nobel committee turned its attention to Venezuela, even as US President Donald Trump repeatedly asserted he should receive the Peace Prize.

Award watchers, though, predicted Trump wouldn’t win, arguing that his actions have weakened the global order the committee upholds.
