City and business leaders are vowing to crack down on crime in Uptown Charlotte, including for minor infractions that impact public safety and quality of life in and around the central business district.

At a joint news conference on Wednesday, city officials, including Mayor Vi Lyles and City Manager Marcus Jones, joined Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officials and leaders from Charlotte Center City Partners to announce new initiatives aimed at combating crime and countering public perceptions that Uptown is no longer safe.

The moves come as a growing number of residents and business leaders have complained publicly following high-profile crimes in Charlotte, most notably after the Aug. 22 killing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, who was fatally stabbed aboard a LYNX Blue L
