In 2024, the City of Medicine Hat initiated discussions about purchasing the proposed Saamis Solar park, a potential $600-million project that proponents say would ensure the city’s energy future in the face of looming decarbonization policies and volatility in the price of natural gas.

The Alberta Utilities Commission authorized the city’s bid to obtain ownership of the project in February. But candidates in the race for mayor are divided over whether the Saamis Solar project should advance.

Incumbent Linnsie Clark says that adding solar energy to the city’s energy mix naturally compliments Medicine Hat’s historic investment in natural gas.
