To celebrity makeup artist Mélanie Inglessis, music and beauty are inextricably intertwined. As a teen in Paris, she was in the psychobilly (a mix of punk rock and rockabilly) scene, which meant that she attended concerts wearing a red lip and sky-high pompadour held together with a homemade mixture of sugar and water. She traded that for rockabilly music, pinup hairdos, and ’90s brown lips when she moved to London at 19, where she zoomed around on a motorcycle and ended up taking makeup courses at the London College of Fashion. After graduating, she assisted Charlotte Tilbury, Pat McGrath, and Val Garland before setting off on her own. She’s often booked for her ability to create perfected, luminous skin — but of course, there’s always “a hint of rock and roll somewhere,” she says.
