Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, prompting outrage from Republicans over the perceived snub of President Donald Trump.

Machado, known as Venezuela’s “Iron Lady,” received the prize for “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said in a statement, praising her as a “brave and committed champion of peace” and “a woman who keeps the flame of democracy burning amid a growing darkness.”

Machado, who is in an undisclosed location for security reasons, according to The Washington Post, was shocked by the announcement.
