Michael Cohen, the former attorney for President Donald Trump's Trump Organization, reacted to the indictments of James Comey and Letitia James, saying he is "someone who went through the system" and also "politically targeted."
Cohen served time in prison after pleading guilty to his involvement in facilitating "hush money" payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels to try and influence the 2016 election, which led to Trump's conviction in New York, responded in a Substack essay Friday to the "prosecution of Trump’s enemies."
"I am someone who went through the system myself. I know it better than most because I, too, was politically targeted. My point is not partisan. I am merely stating facts; whether they fit your opinion or not," he writes.
"And the fact is this: prosecutors, whether Democrat or Republican, whether career veterans or political appointees, wield a system stacked in their favor. They don’t need to be brilliant to win. They don’t need to be fair. They just need to decide that you are the target."
Cohen has been critical of Trump and the justice system following his prison sentence.
"Letitia James’s indictment isn’t about skill, evidence, or brilliance. It’s about a system built to favor the government; and now turning on the very people who once controlled it," Cohen writes.
Cohen argues that it doesn't really matter how experienced or inexperienced Lindsey Halligan is. Halligan, Trump's former personal attorney, is now acting U.S. attorney.
"Halligan’s success in securing indictments only underscores the truth insiders already know: the government’s power, not individual brilliance, is what wins cases," Cohen writes.
"Weak cases succeed all the time because the government controls the rules, the resources, and the narrative. And once that machinery is turned against you, the likelihood of walking away unscathed is slim," he adds.
