MICHIGAN CITY — City officials confirmed Friday that a "ransomware incident" is responsible for disrupting municipal phone service, and fouling data and internal online access just more than two weeks ago.

An investigation is underway to determine the full scope and impact of the network disruption, the city said.

"Law enforcement is involved, making the matter an active investigation and limiting what the city can share publicly at this stage," the update reads.

Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch reportedly told the city council earlier this week that the focus is on safety restoring systems impacted by the breach and ensuring critical municipal operations continue.

The investigation includes a team of in-house and outside information technology professionals.
