ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) — Athens High School will host a special celebration during Friday Night's football matchup vs Hartselle High School.

Athens High School will be honoring the 1975 State Championship Football Team during pregame at Athens Stadium at 6:30 p.m.

Fifty years ago, the 1975 team secured the Class 3A State Championship, the first-ever for Athens High School.

Led by Coach Larry McCoy and his staff, the 1975 team battled through a tough schedule with grit, resilience, and teamwork leading to a 12-1-1 record.

The tribute will bring together former players, coaches, cheerleaders, and more.

Additionally, Athens High School was selected as one of the winners of the national T-Mobile Friday Night 5G Lights contest. The school will be presented with a $1,000 check and a $5,000 che
